How we work

Senterra Funders offers expert advising, high-impact giving opportunities, and a learning-oriented donor community, to support concrete progress on one of the greatest challenges of our time.

Our group unites major funders who share the goal of ending factory farming and building sustainable food systems.

Charitable donations by members of Senterra Funders account for roughly 75% of global philanthropic funding dedicated to ending factory farming and creating a more sustainable food system.

More about how we work

Why give to end factory farming?

  • Farmed animals experience pain and distress, which is exacerbated by the intensive conditions on factory farms. Factory farming prioritizes production over animal welfare, and this will not change without intervention.

  • Livestock production contributes to an estimated 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions globally, which is expected to increase if current trends continue.

Shifting towards a plant-based food system is one way to address the catastrophic risks of continued climate change.

  • Intensive animal agriculture has been shown to accelerate the spillover of emerging infectious diseases from animals to humans. And the overconsumption of meat is associated with increased risk of life-limiting illnesses like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

  • Through habitat destruction, monoculture of animal feed crops, and waterway pollution, animal agriculture is the lead driver of biodiversity loss.

Intensive animal agriculture has been identified as the sole threat to an estimated 86% of all species at risk of extinction.

Despite the scale of the issue,
less than 0.1% of global philanthropy goes
towards improving or replacing factory farming.

"Factory farming is one of the great moral catastrophes of our time. Giving to end it, or even to reduce the vast scale of the suffering, is one of the most high-impact opportunities for philanthropy today."
