2024 Funder Giving Priorities Summary

This year, we sent out a Funder Priorities Survey to our members. The goal was an interactive spreadsheet for funders to see other FAF members’ priorities (who opt-in). A secondary goal is a summary of the movement’s funding priorities in an anonymized and aggregated format.

21 completed the survey, and 15 opted in to share their answers in this format. The following are some of the high-level results of the 2024 FAF Funder Priorities Survey. If you are interested in seeing other funders’ priorities, you can fill out the survey to join the database here.

Results

We looked at priorities across species, regions, and types of work. We classified priorities as falling into 4 buckets: High Priority, Moderate Priority, Neutral, and Actively Not Funding. You can read more about the definitions of each bucket here.

As part of our analysis, we scored answers from 1 (actively not funding) to 4 (high priority). For each chart, we sorted answers from highest to lowest average score. One interesting overall finding is that average scores are quite bunched up in the center. The middle 50% of answers fall between 2.7-2.9. Put differently, while there is a lot of variation from funder to funder, as a movement funding priorities are fairly evenly distributed across topics.

Species & Food Type

On average, animals raised in larger numbers (i.e. chicken and fish) were higher priorities among funders, except for farmed invertebrates, which was the lowest priority.

Regions & Countries

North America and Asia were the highest priority locations among funders, with Oceania and the Middle East lower priorities.

Types of Work

With many ‘types of work’ it is harder to draw clear conclusions or map trends. Definitions of each type of work are here.

Grant Size

Unsurprisingly, funders more frequently give smaller grants than bigger grants.
